"Whether he’s playing solo, or with his band... Tim McWilliams displays a dazzling skill on the acoustic guitar, flatpicking traditional tunes and his own material like a modern-day Doc Watson." - Greenville Journal
Tim McWilliams is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and singer, dedicated to the diverse roots music traditions of Western North Carolina. In 2021, Tim received an "In These Mountains" Apprenticeship grant from the North Carolina Arts Council to study under the renowned Madison County musician, Josh Goforth. Under Goforth's mentorship, Tim studied the guitar and banjo styles of Madison and Buncombe Counties in depth, focusing on the music of Byard Ray, Tommy Hunter, the Freeman Family, Lee Wallin, Jerry Adams, Dale McCoy, and the Luke Smather's String Band.
Tim launched his professional music career with a three month cross-country tour after receiving his M.A. in Appalachian Music: Roots & Influences from Appalachian State University in 2014. Since then, he has performed full-time as the leader his group, The Tim McWilliams Band, as well as a solo artist. While continuing to grow and evolve as a musician, Tim already has notable achievements which include: receiving an endorsement by Larrivee Guitars, performing more than 800 shows on stages throughout the greater Southeast, and performing at many iconic regional festivals, such as MerleFest, LEAF, Fall for Greenville, and the Downtown Asheville Independence Day Celebration. In 2019, Tim started a new project with acclaimed old-time musician, William Ritter. For more information on the Tim McWilliams & William Ritter duo, visit their facebook page and give it a like! In addition to being an accomplished performer, Tim has taught private guitar, banjo, and ukulele lessons in the Asheville area since 2014. With expertise in a variety of playing styles and an in depth knowledge of music theory, students of all levels and ages can find common ground on which to improve playing techniques. He holds a North Carolina Professional Educators Music License, is currently a faculty member at the Academy for the Arts and is available for lessons.
